Punjabi is the official language of the state of Punjab in India, one of the 22 scheduled languages recognized by the Constitution of India. The language is also widely spoken in neighboring states and has significant diaspora communities worldwide, particularly in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
According to the 2011 Census of India, Punjabi is spoken by approximately 31.14 million people in India[1], representing about 2.74% of the total Indian population. When including related dialects, this number rises to 33.12 million speakers, making it the 11th most spoken language in India and a vital part of the linguistic landscape of North India.
Punjabi is written in the Gurmukhi script, which flows from Left to Right[2]. Developed by Guru Angad Dev Ji, the second Sikh Guru, in the 16th century, Gurmukhi literally means "from the mouth of the Guru." The script has 45 letters total: 35 consonants (ੳ, ਅ, ੲ, ਸ, ਹ, ਕ, ਖ, ਗ, ਘ, ਙ, ਚ, ਛ, ਜ, ਝ, ਞ, ਟ, ਠ, ਡ, ਢ, ਣ, ਤ, ਥ, ਦ, ਧ, ਨ, ਪ, ਫ, ਬ, ਭ, ਮ, ਯ, ਰ, ਲ, ਵ, ੜ) and 10 vowels (ਅ, ਆ, ਇ, ਈ, ਉ, ਊ, ਏ, ਐ, ਓ, ਔ).
